PORTUGUESE CITIZENSHIP

According to the law, the following individuals may apply for Portuguese citizenship, among other cases:

• Children of Portuguese citizens, whether born in Portugal or abroad;

• Grandchildren of Portuguese citizens. For great-grandchildren to be eligible for citizenship, at least one ascendant must be alive, and they must have obtained their nationality first;

• Spouses or partners of Portuguese citizens who are married or have been in a de facto union / common-law union for more than three years;

• Foreigners legally residing in Portugal for at least five years;

• Children of foreign parents born in Portugal;

• Minor or incapacitated children of a parent who has acquired Portuguese nationality;

• Descendants of Sephardic Jews.
